The scholarship was established in 2021 after the death of the reporter, writer, and author Loren Martin Hintz. Hintz passed away in 2020 and to commemorate his life and passion his son, Steven Hintz, approached CNS to host the scholarship.

Hintz spent his life documenting the unique people of the world through photos, and words. He was dedicated to the advancement of journalism and making space for diverse journalist voices.

The scholarship was created to support his vision for the future of journalism and give Milwaukee writers the chance to receive support while they build their careers.
