The CNS Scholarship Fund Has Awarded $22K in Four Years. Meet the Final Recipients

The CNS 2022 Scholarship Fund Recipients

The fourth annual CNS Scholarship Fund presented by American Family Insurance awarded three $3,000 checks along with laptops to young Wisconsin creatives and a student.

The CNS 2022 Scholarship Fund recipients are Kearra Hartz, Abdelrassoul Ahmat Hassan, and Corrine Flowers. Hassan and Flowers were selected for the CNS Creative Scholarship and Hartz was selected for the CNS Student Scholarship.

The supporting sponsors are the Greater Milwaukee Urban League, The Sugar Maple, Milwaukee Bucks, and Chloe Mayer.

Hassan plans to use his funds to invest in his clothing brand Forever Loading Co., which includes buying printing machinery, blank tees, and creating a marketing plan.

“When I first got the email I couldn’t believe it, so I had to read it back a couple of times before I could actually believe that it was my scholarship.”

– Abdelrassoul Ahmat Hassan

Flowers is a gamer girl and plans to use the funds to upgrade her home office to help her reach her goal of growing in the industry.

Hartz will be attending Marquette Univerisity in the Fall for Psychology, and she says this is her first scholarship.

“I feel like mental health is important and it’s not really talked about a lot, so I definitely want to help my community…and this scholarship will definitely help.”

– Kearra Hartz

The CNS 2022 Recipients will be the last winners of the fund as it officially ended in 2022. Flowers could not be reached in time for the photoshoot and interview.

What’s Next for CNS?

Since 2019, we have awarded $22,500 to 12 Wisconsin creatives and students ages 17-28 years old. Over 75 percent of the funding went to Black and POC applicants, 58 percent went to women, and 33 percent went to students.

The scholarship started because our Founder Nyesha Stone never received a scholarship. She also wanted to help retain some of Milwaukee’s young talent.

As we grow, we’re focused on empowering the next generation of journalists through journalism programming, workshops, and other innovative ideas.

We will continue to run the CNS Travel Writing Scholarship Fund as it fits into our current core focus and values.

“I am so excited for the future of Carvd N Stone. We are really defining what impact we want to make in this world and it comes down to supporting the next generation of Black and Brown journalists.”

– CNS Nyesha Stone
