The United States is home to over 65.2 million Latinos, making up 19.5% of the population. Every year the Hispanic community’s cultures, struggles, and successes are recognized with Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated from September 15 to October 15. Enjoy this short list of 10 ways to celebrate the month and community in Milwaukee.

1. UMOS Mexican Independence Day Festival 

Date and time:  August 15, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Location: 2701 S. Chase Ave. 

Description: A free family-friendly festival with carnival rides, vendors, live entertainment, and community resources. A parade will open the festival beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the route starting on 20th & Oklahoma and ending at the UMOS Headquarters.

2. PBS Roots and Legacy Event 

Date and time: September 25, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Location- 2997 S. 20th Street

Description: A Community screening of the new PBS documentary based on Jesus Salas’ memoir, “Obreros Unidos: The Roots and Legacy of the Farmworkers Movement”. Salas is a local activist who cofounded Obreros Unidos, an independent agricultural labor union founded in Wisconsin in the 1960s. 

3. Huichol Yarn Painting with Milwaukee Public Libraries

Date and time: October 2, 2024, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Location: 1960 W. Atkinson Ave. 

Description: Sessions on yarn-painting technique inspired by sacred yarn paintings of the Huichol people of Central Mexico.

4. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Day with the Brewers

Date and time: September 22, 2024, starting at 1:10 p.m. 

Location: 1 Brewers Way

Description: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage and people as the Brewers face the Arizona Diamondbacks. All fans who buy a ticket will receive a special Brewers t-shirt. 

5. Culture X Design Farewell to Summer: Narrated Boat Cruise 

Date and time: October 5, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

Location: 1124  N. Doctor M.L.K Jr. Dr. 

Description: Hit the water with Culture x Design to learn about the City’s river and lake history with a a specially curated music to set the Hispanic vibes. 

6. Hispanic Heritage Month: Reel-to-Real Conversations

Date and time: October 3, 2024, from 5:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m.

Location: 710 W. Historic Mitchell

Description: Join fellow film lovers for a short film diving into the stories of Hispanic and Latine communities followed by small group discussions.

7. Celebración Latina at the Milwaukee Public Museum

Date and time: September 28, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: 800 W. Wells St.

Description: Enjoy free admission to the Milwaukee Public Museum to participate in hands-on activities from museums educators and staff along with cultural presentations throughout the day. 

8. Wines for Hispanic Heritage Month

Date and time: September 15, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Location: 8930 W. North Ave.

Description: Participates can taste and learn more about the wine making traditions of Argentina, CHile, Uruguay, and Mexico. 

9. Mi Gente Mercado: Hispanic Heritage Month Pop-up Market

Date and time: September 28, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Location: 2018 E. North Ave.

Description: This pop-up market provides the opportunity to shop local Hispanic and Latino creators in the Milwaukee. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Latino Entrepreneurial Network of Southeastern Wisconsin. 

10. 4th Annual Latin Night At Linneman’s

Date and time: September 21, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Location: 1001 E Locust St. 

Description: Spend the night supporting and listening to local Latino musicians and artists. The night has a band set of five different groups.
