Dive into the Poetry of Kendrick Lamar’s Lyrics at Black Lens MKE Event, Feb. 17

Honoring Hip Hop through Discussion

Hip Hop is engrained into society. The way people dress, how they talk, and what is seen as “cool” can be traced back to what’s going on in the music scene. Co-Founders of Black Lens MKE Geraud Blanks and Donte McFadden took their love for music and created a series to dive into the art of Hip Hop culture.

The Retrospect Series

The In Retrospect series started in June 2021 around Tupac’s birthday. Blanks and McFadden discussed screening the film “Juice”, so they decided to go for it. The event featured a discussion about Tupac’s music and career with an expert and was accompanied by a video presentation.

After Tupac was Beyoncé and now Kendrick Lamar.

In Retrospect: The Life & Times of Kendrick Lamar takes place on February 17, 2023, starting at 7 p.m. CST at 775 E Center St. in Milwaukee. The goal of the event is to have a conversation and celebration about Grammy/Pulitzer-winning recording artist Kendrick Lamar.

“Hip Hop artists are often constrained by the conception of the art form,” said Blanks. “For years we haven’t looked at rappers as poets.”

The event will feature music journalist Miles Marshall Lewis, the author of “Promise That You Will Sing About Me: The Power and Poetry of Kendrick Lamar”. The talk is just one part of the event. Element Everest-Blanks and DJ Bizzon will host Kendrick Karaoke and more.

Blanks said this is an event for Kendrick fans but it’s also for those who love dissecting the music and artists’ stories.
